“Finally!” – The wives
And suddenly it’s time for the wedding! Kody has a remarkably off-screen (and pretty well inapplicable) bachelor party while the wives do not have a bachelorette party. Then he sits around feeling excited and not doing much while the wives go get their hair did, get their nails done, and try to get all the kids new ‘dos so that everyone has matching curly hair. To go with the frighteningly Aryan uber-blondeness they already have. Robyn runs around like a madwoman, kids pick fights with each other, and no one thinks to offer the bride-to-be any help and she doesn’t think to ask for any… so the whole melding of the families thing needs a little work, still.
Meanwhile, the weather looks like it’s getting bad, and the invitations for the reception have the wrong address, so Kody has to go to where it says they’ll be and leave a note saying where they actually are. In the end, everything turns out fine, and they get married in a secret ceremony that the cameras weren’t allowed into because non-Mormons are never allowed into the wedding ceremony. Then everyone goes to the reception, and all we get are snippets because most of their family members didn’t want to be on TV, but it looks lovely. Robyn’s dress is beautiful, even if it did cause scandal in the family, and her second dress for the purpose of family pictures so she’ll match everyone is lovely, too. Everyone seems so happy. It’s a charming and exciting way to end the first (and way too short) first season.
The idea that Robyn is a bit of a spoiled princess has surfaced these last two episodes: not just the dress debacle, but also with the reception. Meri had a big one as the first wife, but Janelle lost all her friends and family when she decided to be a second wife, and Christine thought it would be rude to make a fuss… but Robyn gets whatever she wants.
But it seems like most of the animosity toward Robyn and her position evaporated as soon as she became a wife, and the scene where she got her claddagh to match the others was good to see: solidarity at last! Can we look forward to Robyn moving in next season? Will Kody really be ‘counting’ and get more wives? After all, his first three were within a year or two of each other, so will Robyn be like a second first wife? Will he be the wife-collecting equivalent of the Duggers and their kids?
More thoughts on Sister Wives, “Four Wives and Counting”:
* There was talk that Kody might get arrested for bigamy, but it seems now like that won’t happen since he hasn’t abused his wives or children. This is good news for the family, but it would have been super-interesting to see how everyone could function with Kody in jail!
* At the end of the episode, where the wives are going home one at a time was probably the most convincing evidence that Kody really does love all his wives — very tender and very sweet.
* It’ll be interesting to see how the jealousy plays out next season. Especially since she’s younger than everyone and they wanted to have more kids now that they’re married!
