The drama seems to have been wrung out of this iteration of The Real World.
This episode of The Real World was striking for its lack of conflict. Maybe that’s why there’s “love” in the title. Ironically for this show, that doesn’t even mean hot tub hookups or drunken tomfoolery either. I guess the cast is hitting that typical period where everyone senses that the end is near and its actually time to sober up (a bit), step back, and realize that your “job” for the moment is to essentially hang out in a free mansion in a hipster part of the nation’s capital and get filmed.
The “drama” came in the form of Mike struggling with his boyfriend’s turmoil in the aftermath of coming out to his family in Colorado. Mike has shown flashes of annoying selfishness and immaturity throughout the season, but you can sense there’s a real person with integrity and it’s hard not to hope that things work out well for the couple.
Meanwhile, Josh got more screen time than usual this week as he took Ty and Andrew up to Philly for a family wedding. There was a bit of drama when Ty danced with Josh’s mom during the reception but my take is that the editor’s were working overtime to create something out of nothing here. Josh’s band also performed later in the episode and back in DC, and while much was made of the housemates hating on Josh’s voice (for good reason – he could really use a good dose of P Diddy’s Making the Band voice crew to give him guidance) he has genuine stage presence and gave the crowd a good show.
My sense is that we’ve seen what we need to see from this crew and this edition of The Real World, and it won’t be sad at all to sail them off into the sunset with next week’s series finale.

- There were a few forays in the cast going out to get jobs to “make the most” of their experience in DC, but what happened to the mandatory jobs of seasons’ past? It seemed that most of the house spent much of their time being crazy lazy this season.
