The Millionaire Matchmaker – “Justin & Kevin”: a divorce waiting to happen

Justin & Kevin - The Millionaire Matchmaker

“This is textbook Harvard School of Psychology chauvinism.” – Patti

For once, the episode opens not with Patti Stanger and her wedding plans, but with a Life & Style photo shoot featuring goth-y couple Destin and Rachel, and also their goth-ily named child, Sin*.

Check out our full and snark-tastic Millionaire Matchmaker episode guide and updates! Trash and treasure in equal increments, we promise.

* I can imagine a very old school “who’s on first?” comedy bit featuring Sin in a police station interrogation room. “What’s your name?” “Sin.” “I’m not asking what you’re copping to yet, buster, let’s not get ahead of ourselves, I said what’s your name?” And so on. I’ll be here all week. Anyway…

Destin lets us know that they are “high end matchmakers” and therefore a photo spread featuring his family is in “great demand.”

The Millionaire Matchmaker – “Justin & Kevin”: the clients & intro videos

Chelsea tells us about Justin Levine, a Hollywood producer from Canada who has family money… which seems like a really nice way to get started as a Hollywood producer, should that be one’s ambition in life. He’s a “trust fund baby” who wants to settle down but he is also “Peter Pan.” Someone who acts like a kid, and probably not in a good way, in other words.

The other client featured for this episode is also a movie producer. He’s also “an admitted male chauvinist pig,” Destin notes.

“I cannot cure chauvinism,” Patti says.

Kevin Strom introduces himself via video, and immediately he says, “I’ve got girls coming onto me all the time.” “It’s difficult being a male, it’s hard saying no,” he adds.

“That’s a divorce waiting to happen,” Patti opines.

Kevin goes on to say that he prefers petite women with big boobs and “nice little butts.” He also keeps a spreadsheet of all of his dates/conquests so that he can “have a sincere interest in who they are.” We have a Stage 5 Creeper here, people.

Which to say, “that’s a little sick,” as Chelsea notes. Or, from Patti: “This is textbook Harvard School of Psychology chauvinism.” That said, Patti wants him as a client to help out her “sisters” in the female community… by “fixing” Kevin or something, I guess.

Meanwhile, Justin Levine introduces himself in the video as being from Toronto, but now lives in LA. “Oh God, the Jews are back,” a disgusted sounding Patti says. He’s a 40-years-old, and a film producer and entrepreneur.

The gang also seems to enjoy making fun of the fact that Justin is Canadian. Also, Patti thinks his whole deal is “delayed adolescence.”

Maybe these two dudes will meet and make a bad movie together, Destin concludes (more on this topic below!).

The Millionaire Matchmaker – “Justin & Kevin”: Patti meets the clients

Patti swings by Kevin’s apartment, and we learn that Kevin runs Red Sky Media and is worth $4 million. He lives in downtown LA, which not a ton of people did around that time, as an aside.

Patti questions why Kevin is looking for love, and thinks his wishy-washy answer is a lie. Nonetheless, she moves forward with him with a plan to “put him into singles boot camp and kick his butt.”

“I don’t believe you’re the stud puppy you say you are,” she adds. At the mixer, Patti says she wants to see him in “cool action” to see how great his game is, she says sarcastically.

Over at Justin’s place, Patti’s plan is to turn him into a “real man.” Justin says that he’s “30 + 10, but still feels 20.” Does this guy know his math, or what? He complains about how hard it is to meet women in LA: “If I can’t meet a girl at an Oscar party that I throw, I give up.” No word about who is on the invite list for these Oscar parties.

We also learn that Justin is yet another rich kid* who ends up as a Millionaire’s Club client. His parents gifted him a “set of buildings” when he was a young man. Patti diagnoses Justin with “delayed adolescence.”

* And yet another rich kid who ends up as a movie producer in Los Angeles to boot!

When Justin gives his literal dimensions of what he wants in a female body, Patti says, “So you want tits on a stick.”

“My millionaires need a gigantic wake up call,” is Patti’s assessment of both her boys this week. Her plan is to have all of women at the mixer to “look the same” by having them wear the same kind of clothes to make them “use their brains.”

I don’t get the point of this plan at all, but then again, I’m not a “matchmaker to the stars.”

The Millionaire Matchmaker – “Justin & Kevin”: the recruiting session

Patti had a rough time finding anyone she liked for either of the two fellas at first. And that caused her to take out her frustrations on Rachel.

“We have two of the biggest ‘model-izers’ [in Justin & Kevin], and every girl coming in the door is piglets,” she tells Rachel. She follows this up with, “I’m gonna vomit,” and then in an aside to Destin, “You are so not getting laid tonight.”

Eventually, a few prospects emerge – motorcycle loving, down to earth Michelle for Justin, outdoorsy makeup artist Jamie Michelle for Kevin – but Patti says she needs more help to get the upcoming mixer truly going the way she wants.

The Millionaire Matchmaker – “Justin & Kevin”: the mixer

As Patti warned, all of the ladies dress up in the same exact outfit for the mixer, which is blue tank tops and jeans. They are all styled with hair in a ponytail and limited makeup as well.

Justin and Kevin meet, and it occurs to me that Kevin looks like a (very) poor man’s Ryan Reynolds.

Justin is immediately shocked that everyone is dressed the same and without makeup. “I was expecting models,” he says. Kevin, for his part, finds the whole thing “hot.”

Patti is forced to step in to advise Justin to not talk about himself so much, and meanwhile has a standoff with Kevin, who kind of orders her to get tequila shots for him and his gaggle of gals. “No tip for you,” Kevin says.

“If the chauvinist wants that kind of date, he can buy it in Vegas,” says Patti.

For the mini-date round, Kevin selects Jamie and lively, vivacious Jennifer. Justin picks Kate… and the same lively, vivacious Jennifer. Patti sees this as a good sign.

Justin and Kate’s mini-date is fairly awkward, and 41-year-old Kevin and 21-year-old Jamie together are even worse. “I didn’t like his attitude whatsoever,” Jamie says later.

Meanwhile, both mini-dates involving Jennifer seem to go well, so an exciting tie breaker round could be in the offing. And, spoiler: they both pick her, so Jennifer is tasked with breaking the tie.

Something really weird and awkward then goes down: when Jennifer hesitates in making her decision, both fellas attempt to turn the tables and change their decision to date Jamie and Kate. This makes Patti furious, and she threatens to kick both men out of The Millionaires’ Club. Finally, Jennifer selects Justin, leaving Kevin with half-his-age-yikes Jamie.

All of the omens here are the opposite of good.

The Millionaire Matchmaker – “Justin & Kevin”: Justin and Jennifer’s first date

Jennifer heads to a “secret location” for their date, and it turns out to be a high end shopping trip. Justin uses the term “pretty woman” as Jennifer tries on outfits for him, so take that for what you will. Jennifer for her part loves the “pampering.”

Then something really weird and really awkward happens: Kate from the mixer shows up, who Justin had surreptitiously tracked down on Facebook.

“Clearly this man needs to grow up. I am beyond livid right now. I just want to slap him,” Jennifer says in a confessional, in what could be termed the only reasonable response a human could have.

Then Kate is told to go off and do her shopping round. Kate thinks it’s “fair” that she be part of the date for her part.

Dinner is a trainwreck, and I’m surprised that Jennifer hasn’t bolted. Kate is floating on Cloud Nine… because Justin bought her jewelry.

The funniest moment of the episode: Justin stands up and says he’s going to get candy. Jennifer shoots back, “Is Candy another girl?”

Astonishingly, Justin says that Jennifer should have been more “appreciative,” and then laughs it off just like he “laughs everything off.”

The Millionaire Matchmaker – “Justin & Kevin”: Kevin and Jamie’s first date

Kevin shows up in a power suit at the St. Regis to meet Jamie, a girl who could easily be his daughter, age-wise. Jamie for her part is dressed in more like first date for a 21-year-old garb, including a knit hat. A spa treatment and dinner is in the offing, Kevin tells her.

The first stop at the spa is a “red wine bath” in a cozy tub, which Jamie rightly calls “uncomfortable” and “too much.” She also quickly tells Kevin that he has “no game.” More fun, less romance would have been far better, she (very rightly) assesses.

Things warm up at dinner a bit, and the two have fun forcing themselves to try the duck liver the chef prepared for them. But then things take a turn when Kevin tries to get her to stay the night with him. “I’m not a hoochie,” Jamie replies.

Kevin is then proud of himself for not pushing it and romantically showing Jamie to the door.

The Millionaire Matchmaker – “Justin & Kevin”: the post-date upshot

Patti calls Jamie, who relays that Kevin tried to get her to sleep with him. Patti quickly goes back to her “no sex before monogamy” mantra. Kevin then comes down to the office, who cops to what he did. But he feels that it’s a good thing that he was “too romantic,” and shows zero remorse. They fight for a bit, and then asks Patti how he got someone to propose to her.

Then somehow things ratchet down slightly and they end up shaking hands.

Jennifer then visits the office, and lays out the night of bizarro-ness that went down. Justin then shows up, and sidenote that it’s a rarity for the couple to both appear together with Patti at the end of the episode.

Patti, like Jennifer, is livid. “You’re a douchebag,” she says. Justin too shows zero remorse, and gets kicked out. “He’s 40, who would want to date that person?” is Patti’s final retort.

The end of episode captions tell us: “Justin and Kate are still playing together. Jennifer is now dating grown-ups.” And: “Kevin and Jamie continue to date, but Kevin is not ready to make a commitment.”

A bit of a real surprise on that last bit of news to wrap things up.

The Millionaire Matchmaker – “Justin & Kevin”: where are they now?

I couldn’t dig up anything on either of the fellas, so I figured I’d dig into their IMDB credits as both are producers.

I did not recognize anything that Justin Levine has produced to date. His most recent project is called Wolf Mountain, and stars no one that I have heard of.

I do have a tiny thing in common with Justin, as it turns out. His biography mentions that he was involved with “celebrity events,” which includes “touring Jamie Kennedy in Canada.” Well, I once worked for a tiny tech company that produced truly awful websites that ostensibly were supposed to be paid subscription sites for… let’s just say non-superstar celebrities. One of those celebs? Jamie Kennedy.

Kevin Strom has made the rounds on reality TV as it turns out, ranging from the classic trashtastic TV of Blind Date in 1999 to Below Deck, Beverly Hills Pawn, and a bunch of others. He also has a bunch of acting credits, but not for anything I’ve heard of.

On the producing side, Kevin has four total credits as of this writing. I haven’t heard of any of them, though the 2009 film, Breaking Point, has recognizable stars in Tom Berenger, Busta Rhymes, and Armand Assante.

Breaking Point has a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. “Overplotted and underwhelming,” says Variety critic, Justin Chang.
