“What Southern fantasy world is this guy living in?” – Patti
The Millionaire Matchmaker, Matt Brooks & Adam Winters: client intros
After another contrived opening segment where Patti Stanger pretends to yell at a client on the phone (“No sex before monogamy!”) and underlings Justin and David pretend to have a conversation about decorating the office for Valentine’s Day, Patti announces that they are going to “re-create the Red Ball.”
Check out our full and snark-tastic Millionaire Matchmaker episode guide and updates! Trash and treasure in equal increments, we promise.
“It’s like Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and the Super Bowl all rolled into one,” she says. And later in the episode, she explains that in a rare move, she’ll allow the mixer participants to get to know and cavort with non-clients (she’s supplying the dudes for this to supplement the two male clients) so that everyone can end up with a happy Valentine’s Day.
We then get into the client introductions, starting off with Matt Brooks, who looks quite a bit like a very young Barack Obama. In his intro video, Matt tells us that he lives in Marina Del Rey, California, and that he’s 30-years-old, and worth between $3-$5 million from being an Internet entrepreneur.
This is overshadowed though by a topless picture of Matt with his surfboard on the beach, which causes both Patti and underling Marisa to shout, “Whoa!”
Matt also says that he “creates fun” by calling women up and pretending to be Barack Obama, and after hearing his impression he should leave that shtick to Key & Peele.
Matt is attracted to petite women, which he demonstrates by holding out his hands at his hips and saying, “I want them to fit between here and here.”
“He wants a little spinner?” Patti says. “Who goes on his lap and spins like a top?”
Side note that there are very few episodes of The Millionaire Matchmaker where Patti does not bring up “spinners.”
Matt also has been a serial dater and doesn’t like to be alone, so Patti takes that into consideration for how to get him on the road to a serious relationship.
Underling Justin then introduces the young Adam Winters, 24, a self-made millionaire from Tennessee. In his intro video, he says he’s a “good ‘ole country boy living in Beverly Hills,” and that he’s worth a little over $1 million.
Adam is a “player” when it comes to motorcycles, he tells us, and claims to “ride through Beverly Hills on a dirt bike with no helmet.” Which, in my view, just sounds pretty dumb.
“That’s very Jackass of you,” Patti says to the monitor in what may be one of the most astute things she’s every said on the show.
Adam’s type is exotic, curvy types like Jessica Alba, he tells us.
“That guy is 100% Beverly Hillbilly,” Patti assesses, “because they wanted to live like rich people and not be hicks.” She then goes on an extended riff about how no one would want to “f— someone with that kind of accent,” which I’m not going to comment on at all.
The Millionaire Matchmaker, Matt Brooks & Adam Winters: Patti meets the clients
Patti meets Matt at a spot called Le Cellier, where we find out that he runs a company that is the “largest manufacturer of nautical décor in the world” with 350 employees. Which seems like a vastly different thing than “Internet entrepreneur,” but whatever.
Patti talks to Matt about his history as a “serial monogamist,” but that communication issues have been an issue with his past relationships. With his last serious relationship, for example, he found out on a different page with his girlfriend when it comes to the topic of having kids.
Patti’s advice is that Matt needs to ask the “hard questions” early on and “look under the hood of the car,” in addition to finding someone who knows who she truly is and what she wants in a relationship and in life.
Patti then meets Adam at La Dolce Vita in Beverly Hills. “God, are you a country person,” is the first thing that she says to him upon her arrival.
We also find out that Adam runs Green Technology Transport, the “greenest form of transportation in the U.S.” He then mysteriously adds that the business is “profitable.”
Adam’s mission: to find a “good ‘ole country girl.” He then uses the example of “someone who will make me a bowl of cereal” to describe his ideal soulmate.
I’m not sure why but I find that example to be extremely funny.
Patti immediately calls out Adam for his desire to find his wife in Los Angeles and then “eventually” take her back with him to Tennessee.
“If you make the money, you make the rules,” Adam replies.
“I am not in the business of handing out trophy wives,” Patti tells the camera separately. “No motherf—er, I make the rules,” she adds.
“What Southern fantasy world is this guy living in?” Patti continues
Adam was engaged, but his fiancé cheated on him. While he was in Miami planning the wedding, he found out that she was on a dating site, and he ghosted her and never talked to her again.
Patti feels that if Adam can lead with his Southern charm and drop his opinionated side, he’s got a shot at finding someone with her help.
The Millionaire Matchmaker, Matt Brooks & Adam Winters: the recruiting session and mixer
Usually, I call out highlights from the recruiting session in this section, but it was rather uneventful this time around, with not a single Patti meltdown or even cruel putdown in sight. We heard a few Valentine’s Day breakup stories, and some of the women professed to like “Barack Obama types” or were really into “Southern stuff” so were routed toward either Matt or Adam depending, and then we also found out that the ladies will be outfitted at the mixer/Red Ball by a company called Rent the Runway.
It makes sense of course that the ladies at the Red Ball are all dressed in red, but for reasons that I don’t understand the gents are not.
I feel compelled to call out a “line” (or “joke”?) that Adam tries out with the ladies, which is this: “They call them freeways out here,” meaning California. “But there ain’t nothing free about it.”
I’m honestly not sure what point he’s trying to make: the vast majority of California roads don’t involve tolls. LA has an E-Z Pass thing but that’s for if you want to drive in the high occupancy lane with only one driver. The ladies around him laugh it up at this line though like our guy is Bill Burr, so that right there shows you the power of money with a sidenote of confident delivery, I guess.
Then Adam segues into bragging about how he’s a “hellraiser” because he rode down Rodeo Drive on a motorcycle without his helmet on.
“Risky,” one of the women replied. That’s one word it.
Oh, speaking of “Down Rodeo,” here’s Rage Against the Machine, off of their Evil Empire LP (#379 of the best 1,000 albums ever).
For the mini-date round, Adam chooses “wholesome” Kate and Laura, while Matt selects Emily and Tiffany. With this, the additional Red Ball dudes roll out so that they can mingle and dance with the ladies who were not selected.
This mini-date round involves dancing, and I’ll preface the following with stating that I’m not a talented dancer at all: Adam’s dancing style is to rock back and forth with his partner, metronome-style.
And meanwhile, while Matt is a little bit smoother in both his motions and his chatter, I found this to be downright hilarious: he asks Emily where she went to college, and she replies, “Occidental College.” And then they move onto the next topic.
What’s so hilarious, you ask? After all the constant talk about Barack Obama and Matt “pretending” to be the 44th president, neither he nor Emily (who went there) fail to recognize that Barack Obama attended Occidental College for two years.
Anyway, moving onto the master date round: Matt chooses Emily, 21, a yoga teacher who wants to go to law school, while Adam opts for Kate, who enjoys cooking, sailing, and cooking and works in retail sales.
The Millionaire Matchmaker, Matt Brooks & Adam Winters: Adam and Kate’s first date
Adam and Kate meet at a wildlife learning center. “Who doesn’t want to learn about animals mating?” Adam tells the camera in a wooden voice.
While pounding rosé, Adam casually asks their guide, “Is that his penis?” while getting a tour with his date.
Adam later tells Kate that he likes to “hell raise” at the local mud pit.
“I like mud,” Kate says.
Later, Adam tells the camera, “She’s a good simple girl.”
So maybe these two are a match made in… The Millionaire Matchmaker Factory of Dreams/Nightmares.
Dinner is a place called Piccolo in Venice, California. He rented (or by “he” let’s say “the show”) rented out the entire restaurant, which can be a romantic move, or a super awkward move, depending on how the vibe plays out, I guess.
I mention this in part because I grew quite bored watching these two kids have first date banter with each other. To be fair, they do seem to like each other, but I don’t care much for Adam so I’m not all that interested to be honest.
The Millionaire Matchmaker, Matt Brooks & Adam Winters: Matt and Emily’s first date
Matt and Emily meet at a place called Sweet, where the activity will entail chocolate-making.
In the Chocolate Lab, Chocolatier Richard Ruskell instructs the couple on making chocolate bars and also lets them know that “chocolate is a great aphrodisiac.”
Matt and Emily get very flirty immediately, and it’s clear that there’s a strong attraction with these two. As Emily feeds Matt a piece of chocolate, she leans in, hesitates, and says, “I want to kiss you right now,” and there is zero reason to disbelieve her.
And then a moment later, they do kiss, and it’s pretty hot.
Dinner follows at Sweet, and it’s a super romantic scene that includes many bouquets of roses, fondue, champagne, and a friend of Matt’s playing acoustic guitar in the background. Emily and Matt have a really easy rapport, and it’s completely believable that these two could potentially enter into a real relationship.
Emily talks about wanting to work for the ACLU one day, and I wound up feeling a little bad about my teasing her for not knowing that a constitutional scholar and future president went to the same college she went to. Which is to say, she won me over.
The two give a little toast to Patti to thank her at the end of the date, and it’s one of the rare moments when I feel like this often trashy but typically fun reality TV show has a genuine and honest moment.
The Millionaire Matchmaker, Matt Brooks & Adam Winters: post-dates upshot
Justin and Patti call Kate first, who relays that the date was “a lot of fun,” and also that she saw “two turtles doing it” at the Wildlife Learning Center.
We also learn that she and Adam kissed, and that she’s excited to see where things go next.
In the office, Adam confirms that he really likes Kate and is going to see her later that day.
Kate then tells Patti and David that she really likes Matt, and that the date was amazing.
“I hope you didn’t spread,” Patti replies, in one of the crasser things she’s ever said on the show (and she’s said a lot of crass things, people).
Matt and Kate actually have gone out again already and are very happy. Patti ends by saying that she’s expecting a wedding invite.
Matt then stops by the office, who says that he’s learned a lot from Patti, and “your magic works.”
The end of episode captions then tell us: “Beverly Hillbilly Adam may have his Country Girl. He and Kate have been out twice since Patti set them up.” And: “Matt and Emily couldn’t be a better love match. They sent Patti pictures of their recent trip to Costa Rica.”
The Millionaire Matchmaker, Matt Brooks & Adam Winters: where are they now?
Sometimes I dig up interesting stuff on what’s happened to people who appeared on The Millionaire Matchmaker, and sometimes I don’t.
If true, this is interesting.
According to a publication called Oak Ridge Today, Adam Winters plead guilty in a court of law in Tennessee involving a $2.5 million extortion scheme “involving the former managing contractor at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge.”
I don’t know what happened next, but apparently he could have been sentenced for up to two years in prison.
Also: I knew I had a bad feeling about this dude from watching the episode. Just saying.
Meanwhile, Matt Brooks – who goes by Matthew Brooks on LinkedIn – is currently the co-founder and president of Brilliant Directories in San Jose, Costa Rica.
Maybe he and Emily never returned from their vacation there?
