Kitchen Nightmares, “Flamango’s”: Florida + Mangos = hideous beyond belief

Kitchen Nightmares - Flamango's

Shut your mouth already!” – Adele

Kitchen Nightmare’s loves hunting for nightmares in suburban New York City, and such is the case once again with Flamanago’s, located in the “quaint village” of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey.

I grew up on Long Island, New York, and I often heard the derisive joke as a kid that New Jersey is the “armpit of America,” but then again… see the part where I grew up on Long Island, New York.

Anyway, Bill and Adele ran successful diners in the area for decades before launching a new business opportunity. Bill, a sweet seeming older man, talks about how he was ready to retire after earning about $1 million in selling his previous restaurant, but it’s implied that Adele wanted to get back into business.

So now we have Flamango’s, perhaps the very worst restaurant name I’ve ever heard of, which is co-run by Bill, Adele, and their daughter, Cheryl.

It’s important to note that Cheryl has a heavy New Jersey accent (which is not that different than the Long Island dialect, really). She speaks of her love for Florida, pronounced FLAHR-i-duh, which inspired her to smash together “Florida” and “Mangos” to form the super-restaurant name, Flamango’s.

Honestly, Flamango’s sounds like the name of the restaurant that’s featured in a bad comedic movie.

Jodi, a server, notes that while the owners aspired to make Flamango’s a high-class eatery, instead it’s “hideous… hideous beyond belief.”

She’s not wrong: the interior décor is schlocky and kitschy combined in some kind of unattractive amalgamation.

Christie, a server, adds that “this restaurant is very poorly run.”

The consensus is that Adele doesn’t respect or listen to the staff.

With this, we see a little montage of Adele yelling at her employees, including one moment where she tells someone to “shut your mouth already!”

Meanwhile, Bill is put to on all manner of things ranging from tableside service for diners to building maintenance.

“I get really upset when I see Bill overwork like that. That man should be retired,” Isabella, a server, says.

He seems like an affable, sweet older man and you automatically root for him after seeing him for a moment or two.

Bryce, the head chef, has only been on the job for four weeks and deems the food “less than mediocre.” He’d love to redesign the menu but says that the owners won’t allow him to.

With all of that going on, Adele and Bill are at risk of losing everything. Adele bottom lines it as such: “We are in deep s—.”

Ramsay meets Bill at a little farm that Bill and Adele had planned to spend most of their time in before getting sucked back into the restaurant biz. Bill can’t help but chuckle in telling Ramsay how now they’re back working hard and yet are fully broke.

When Ramsay meets the rest of the family, he soon learns that the 42-year-old Cheryl is still living at home with her parents. The British chef responds with the expected amount of shock and surprise at this.

At Flamango’s, Ramsay’s initial reaction to the weirdly kitschy, tropical décor is, “It’s like a zoo in here.” He also inquires as to whether Cheryl was drunk when she did the planning for it.

When Ramsay checks out the menu, it’s an instant huge red flag that it’s “massive.” The dishes have name names like Flaming Tiki Platter, Crispy Rainforest Tilapia, and the truly hideously titled Tsunami Filet Mignon.

More importantly, Ramsay’s reaction is to literally spit out a bite of the Flaming Tiki Platter. “S—y Tiki Platter” is Gordon’s attempt at a clever little quip (or something) here.

The Tsunami Filet Mignon meanwhile is the “toughest and chewiest that I’ve ever had in my life.”

When Ramsay meets Head Chef Bryce, Gordon quickly learns that Bryce wants to change the menu, but Cheryl won’t let him. Ramsay still won’t let Bryce off the hook however for serving him “dogs— food.”

At dinner service that night, Chef Bryce quickly gets overwhelmed by the vast array of tropical dishes that being ordered. One of the clearest practical lessons of Kitchen Nightmares is that a pared down menu that focuses on fresh food and quality is one of the best things that a restaurant can do to set itself up for success.

We also see some signs that Adele can be a nightmare to deal with behind the scenes while Bill gets worn down running around with his cart to serve filet mignon to diners tableside.

“They’re too cheap to hire anyone else,” Christie tells Ramsay. “It’s unfair, he should be retired!” she adds.

When Ramsay expresses his concerns about Bill’s health with relation to how hard he’s working, Adele says, “He doesn’t work that hard.”

Adele and Cheryl also choose to see their own version of reality by refusing to accept Ramsay’s opinion that the food is trash.

At a staff meeting the next day, Adele’s stubbornness is on display when she immediately pushes back on Bryce’s advice to cut down on the size of the menu.

“Are you kidding?” she spits at him.

Soon, Adele is bickering with the servers about how she never listens to their opinions about anything.

“You don’t know when to shut up,” she yells at one of them.

For that night’s dinner service, Ramsay begins instituting his agenda, informing Adele and team that Bryce will prepare a special of his own design while Bill is delighted to prepare his favorite meatloaf special for the menu.

“Adele can be downright nasty,” Lisa, a server, says and we see this on display that night. Not only is she mean to her employees in the kitchen, but she has a completely sour attitude with customers who send their overcooked mahi back to the kitchen. When she arrives at their table, she says, “Complaints, what are they?” as though she worked at the complaint department at your local Department of Motor Vehicles.

At another all staff meeting that night, Ramsay announces that “it’s time to say goodbye to the tropics in the center of New Jersey.” With this, he takes delight in leading the team in tossing Willy the Alligator and a bunch of other kitschy crap into a dump truck outside.

Cheryl and Adele are most displeased at this, and perhaps even more so when Ramsay takes the gimmick further and burns all of the junk in a massive bonfire.

“Sometimes it’s hard to say goodbye to the past,” Ramsay tells her.

The next day, the overnight renovation is revealed, which starts with rebranding Flamango’s to The Junction.

“I’m not happy about the name,” Adele tells the camera.

The interior of the restaurant now looks far more open and spacious.

“I hate it,” Adele says when asked by Ramsay what she thinks, and can only fall back on saying it’s “terrible” and that she hates the color blue.

This is a reminder if one is ever needed that being a consultant can be a brutal business.

Adele also predictably hates the much more “limited” menu.

“You have to embrace change,” Ramsay tells her, adding bluntly that if she can’t do that she should “shut the shop up and go retire.”

The new dishes are attractive and classic American cuisine, including a three mini-burger plate, chicken jubilee, lemon salmon, and rose chicken. Adele can only grunt and complain in being introduced to it.

As dinner service begins, Adele can only say, “I really want to go home.” It’s funny soon after when Ramsay refers to her as Madame Grumpy.

The smaller, simple menu allows Chef Bryce to fire food out of the kitchen quickly.

After a customer tells Adele that she loves how bright the new look interior is, Adele responses, “It’s too bright.”

When Bill is finally able to coax his wife into smiling at the hostess station, you can see what a ballast he has been in what’s been a very long marriage.

Soon after, it’s delightful when a giggling Bill tells Ramsay, “She’s a pain in the ass!”

After dinner service, Ramsay tells the entire team that relaunch night was a success, and it’s a foundation that must be built upon.

Adele can only tell the camera something of the effect, “We’ll have to see.”

After Ramsay leaves, Narrator Guy says that while Adele went back to her “old ways,” the new menu was maintained at The Junction, which is a “hit.”
